PWAN 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM 2023

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a widespread phenomenon that affects every class, ethnic group, religion, language, and community in Nigeria. Millions of Nigerian women have been forced to live lives of oppression, exploitation, and abuse.

Calls for action like the 16 days of Activism are crucial because they spotlight the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place at local, national, regional and international levels.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated annually by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations worldwide to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
In support of this civil society initiative, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) calls for global actions to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations.

The global theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which will run from 25 November to 10 December 2023, is “UNITE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls”.

It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations worldwide to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

As an organisation that works towards the development and empowerment of women, PWAN joins the rest of the world on this campaign, which takes place from November 25th – December 10th and seizes this awareness period to amplify its activities in the fight against Violence Against Women and Girls.
